Kamoʻoalewa, also known as 469219 (2016 HO3), is a near-Earth asteroid that was discovered in 2016 by the Pan-STARRS 1 telescope in Hawaii. What makes this object particularly fascinating is its orbital relationship with Earth. While not a true moon, it’s classified as a quasi-satellite—a celestial object that remains gravitationally associated with Earth while orbiting the Sun. Kamoʻoalewa traces a corkscrew-like path, appearing to loop around our planet as both orbit in tandem.

With an estimated diameter of 40 to 100 meters, Kamoʻoalewa is relatively small, but spectral data gathered in 2021 and 2022 revealed something unusual—its surface appears to reflect light in a way strikingly similar to lunar basalt. This has led scientists to hypothesize that it might be a fragment of the Moon, ejected by an ancient impact and now lingering in Earth’s gravitational neighborhood.

To tackle this challenge, China’s China National Space Administration (CNSA) has developed a dual-component spacecraft system: an orbiter and a reentry capsule. The orbiter will conduct the main navigation, proximity operations, and scientific monitoring, while the capsule will safely deliver collected samples back to Earth.

Tianwen-2’s sampling plan includes three distinct methods to adapt to the asteroid’s unknown surface conditions:

  • Hover sampling using a robotic arm to collect dust or particles without making direct contact.
  • Touch-and-Go (TAG) sampling, where a brush-like device makes brief contact with the surface to sweep up loose material—similar to techniques used in NASA’s OSIRIS-REx and JAXA’s Hayabusa2 missions.

CNSA expects the sample return to occur by late 2027, when the capsule will make a high-speed reentry at around 12 km/s—faster than China’s previous reentry attempts with lunar samples.

This portion of the mission will represent China’s first asteroid sample-return, following its successful Chang’e-5 lunar return in 2020.

311P was first detected in 2013 by the same Pan-STARRS telescope. Unlike classic comets, which originate in distant regions like the Oort Cloud or Kuiper Belt, 311P is located in the main asteroid belt—a region between Mars and Jupiter. What makes it exceptional is that it periodically develops multiple dust tails, which appear and vanish at different times. These bursts of activity suggest that 311P is undergoing active material loss, but not necessarily driven by sublimating ice, as in traditional comets.

Instead, 311P may be experiencing rotational shedding, surface fractures, or localized outgassing—all phenomena that blur the lines between asteroid and comet behavior. This hybrid nature has led scientists to classify it as a main-belt comet, a type of object that may hold critical clues about how water and organics were delivered to the inner solar system, including Earth.

To explore this unusual object, Tianwen-2 is equipped with a robust suite of scientific instruments designed to conduct remote sensing over several years, including:

  • Multispectral and infrared spectrometers to study surface mineralogy and detect volatile compounds such as water and carbon-based molecules.
  • A high-resolution optical camera to capture detailed surface imagery and track evolving activity.
  • Ground-penetrating radar to scan the internal structure and identify hidden layers or voids beneath the surface.

The mission is expected to shadow the comet for up to six years, making it one of the longest-duration targeted observations of a comet in human history.

Beyond its scientific ambitions, Tianwen-2 is a showcase of China’s growing technological and strategic ambitions in space exploration. The mission combines long-duration autonomous operations, dual-object targeting, high-speed sample return, and deep-space navigation—capabilities that position CNSA among the elite agencies in planetary exploration.

From a technological perspective, the mission demands:

  • Precise trajectory adjustments and navigation around small bodies with low gravitational fields.

The poem is a philosophical inquiry into the mysteries of the cosmos, making the name especially fitting for a series of missions that seek answers among the stars.

Tianwen-2 continues this tradition by asking some of the most fundamental scientific questions of our time: How did the Earth-Moon system evolve? What defines a comet or an asteroid? And how did Earth acquire the essential elements needed for life?

📅 What’s Next

As of May 2025, the Tianwen-2 spacecraft is fully integrated with its Long March 3B launch vehicle at the Xichang Satellite Launch Center in China’s Sichuan province. The launch window opens at 12:00 PM Eastern / 16:00 UTC on May 28, with backup dates scheduled for May 29 and 30.

Once launched, the spacecraft will begin a series of precise maneuvers en route to its first target, with mission teams closely monitoring all systems during its journey. Upon successful return of the asteroid samples, focus will shift to deep-space operations for the 311P encounter, expected in the early 2030s.
